Famous Shipwrecks
Titanic Perhaps the best known of all shipwrecks, the Titanic, which boasted a gym, swimming pool and a squash court, sank in the early morning of 15 April, 1912 after colliding with and iceberg that ripped open the ship's hull. There weren't enough lifeboats for all passengers, leaving 1503to perish in the icy North Atlantic. The wreck, which lies 323 nautical miles (600kilometres) southeast of Newfoundland, was found in September 1985 by a team of scientists led by Captain Jean-Louis Michel and Dr Robert Ballard.
Mary Rose The Mary Rose buckled under the heavy weight of more than 90 guns and approximately 200 crewmembers on July 19, 1514, much to the horror of England's King Henry VIII, who had called it "the fairest flower of all the ships that ever sailed." Fewer than 40 sailors survived the tragedy. Salvage work started soon after but was haited by 1550. It was not until the mid-1960s that efforts began again. In 1982, close to 60 million people watched the recpry of the warship live on TV.
Belgrano More than 300 men was killed when Argentinian Navy cruiser, the ARA General Belgrano, was hit by two tropedoes fired by British nuclear submarine, HMS Conqueror. Although 770 people were rescued, the attack was controversial beacause the Belgrano had been sailing away from the Falkland islands to escape the 1982 war. A 2003 expedition to recover the wreck at the South Atlantic was unsucessful.
Wilhelm Gustloff The Titanic may be the most famous maritime disaster but the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff in the Baltic Sea resulted in the greatest loss of life. The former German cruise ship was evacuating civilians and wounded soldiers trapped by the advancing Soviet Red Army in East Prussia. More than 10,000 people (4000of whom were children) were crammed into the ship, way over its 1880 capacity. The Wilhelm Gustloff sunk on January 30, 1945 when it was struck by three torpedoes fired by a Soviet submarine. Over 9000 people died.

Manchester United took a giant step towards the Barclays Premiership title with a smash-and-grab victory at Liverpool.

The experienced midfielder was given his marching orders for swinging an arm at Xabi Alonso, but Republic of Ireland utility man O'Shea pounced from close range after Cristiano Ronaldo's free-kick had caused havoc in the six-yard box to settle the issue in United's favour.
Liverpool, though, had dominated much of the game, with Steven Gerrard the first player to cause problems with a probing long through-ball.
Nemanja Vidic prevented it reaching Craig Bellamy and then, under pressure from Dirk Kuyt, did well to clear the ball against the Holland forward and earn a goal-kick.
A testing Gerrard cross was well caught by Edwin van der Sar with Kuyt and Bellamy lurking, before a trademark fierce left-foot drive from around 30 yards by Dan Agger flashed over the bar.
Ronaldo sent a snap shot wide from United's first attack as he met Patrice Evra's cross at the culmination of a neat passing move down the left flank.
Van der Sar made the first save of the day to keep out Mark Gonzalez's header from Gerrard's cross before Steve Finnan made a timely interception at the other end to prevent Scholes' through-ball reaching Ryan Giggs, who was making his 700th appearance for United.
Kuyt's excellent work on the right flank went to waste when Bellamy's lay-off was too strong for Mohamed Sissoko, but the Dutchman drew the foul from Vidic which led to the hosts' next sight of goal.
Gonzalez touched the resulting 20-yard free-kick to John-Arne Riise, whose curling drive with the outside of his left foot was just inches wide of Van der Sar's right-hand post.
Bellamy beat Vidic with alarming ease and pulled a ball across the face of an open goal which narrowly eluded Kuyt in Liverpool's best chance of the half, and Van der Sar then comfortably dealt with Gonzalez's low left-foot drive.
A surging run into the box by Ronaldo was ended by Carragher's well-timed challenge, and Rooney then narrowly failed to latch onto Giggs' threaded pass.
Sissoko sliced a shot wildly wide as a goalless half drew to a close.
Liverpool started the second period in the same attacking style, though, and Gerrard sliced a shot wide before Bellamy squandered an even better chance.
Kuyt's through-ball played the Wales frontman in between the United centre-halves, but a poor first touch and a weak shot allowed Van der Sar to make a good diving save.
Bellamy had the ball in the net moments later but the effort was chalked off, with the striker standing in an offside position when Sissoko diverted Riise's mishit shot to his feet.
A much cleaner strike from the Norway full-back then whistled by the frame of Van der Sar's goal before United weathered the storm and Rooney was flagged offside before finishing with an outrageous back-heel.
The game settled into a scrappy spell, leading to a raft of substitutions as Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez replaced Gonzalez and Bellamy with Fabio Aurelio and Jermaine Pennant.
Opposite number Sir Alex Ferguson introduced Mikael Silvestre and Louis Saha for Evra and Henrik Larsson before Rooney, with blood pouring down his leg after an accidental clash with Carragher, limped off to be replaced by O'Shea.
There was a further scare as Saha went down awkwardly under Agger's challenge on the edge of the box, but a half-hearted penalty appeal was waved away.
Rio Ferdinand cleared well at the other end as Kuyt tried to reach Pennant's teasing cross, and the replacement winger's dangerous run into the box moments later forced the same defender to concede a corner.
Peter Crouch replaced Sissoko before Gary Neville was booked for bringing down the lively Pennant, and United were shortly down to 10 men.
Scholes tangled with Xabi Alonso and flicked out an arm at the Spain midfielder. Despite no contact being made, referee Martin Atkinson decided that the United man's intent warranted a straight red card.
Liverpool threatened to take advantage, with Van der Sar making a superb reaction save to deny Crouch from close range, but there was to be a sting in the tale as United popped up with their stoppage-time winner.
Finnan's foul on Giggs led to a free-kick on the left which Ronaldo fired across dangerously. Saha challenged for the ball with Reina and, as it spun loose in the six-yard box, there was O'Shea to finish calmly and earn his side the three precious points.

Arsenal went some way to putting a turbulent week behind them with a 2-1 victory over Reading at the Emirates Stadium.
The patched-up Gunners proved too strong for the Barclays Premiership's surprise package and made the most of Liverpool's defeat to Manchester United by closing the gap on third place to just one point.
After one of the misses of the season from Cesc Fabregas, second-half goals via Brazilian duo Gilberto, from a penalty, and Julio Baptista proved enough for victory.
However, there was a tense finale when Fabregas put through his own net following a Reading corner.
It had been a positive start by the hosts, Freddie Ljungberg almost getting on the end of a chip into the penalty area by Fabregas.
Theo Walcott - who scored his first senior goal for the club in last weekend's Carling Cup final - was looking lively in attack but Arsenal lacked a telling pass to release the pacy teenager.
After 13 minutes, the ball broke to Baptista on the penalty spot following good work down the right. The Brazilian took a touch to find space, but could only drill his shot wide.
A quick counter-attack from just outside the Arsenal area and a neat interchange of passes saw Ljungberg put clear through the heart of the Reading defence.
However, his low strike from the edge of the Royals box was beaten away by keeper Marcus Hahnemann.
Reading remained calm and slowly started to see more of the ball, if without really testing the Arsenal back line.
The home side then somehow contrived to miss the best opening of the game on 30 minutes.
Baptista stole possession off James Harper, once on Arsenal's books, in the six-yard box.
He drew the keeper before laying a pass back across to Fabregas.
The ball was slightly behind his team-mate, who miskicked completely with the goal at his mercy and the chance went begging.
The home side were now enjoying their best spell, but again could not find the telling pass to open up the Reading defence.
At the start of the second half, Fabregas saw his well-struck 25-yard effort turned away acrobatically by Hahnemann.
On 51 minutes, Arsenal were awarded a penalty when left-back Gael Clichy got ahead of Andre Bikey on the edge of the area.
The Reading defender clearly tugged at the Frenchman, with contact continuing well into the box before Clichy was nudged over, leaving referee Chris Foy to point to the spot with no hesitation.
Gilberto had missed one at Bolton in the FA Cup recently - but the stand-in captain made no mistake on this occasion, beating Hahnemann low into the right corner past the outstretched hand of the keeper.
Arsenal were soon on the attack again as Walcott cut in from the left and curled just wide of the far post from 18 yards.
On 60 minutes, a delicate chip from Fabregas picked out the lively England youngster in the penalty area - but Hahnemann was off his line quickly to make an important block.
Baptista soon showed him how it should be done as Arsenal doubled their lead on 62 minutes.
A quick break following a Reading corner saw Johan Djourou release Denilson, who in turn picked out his fellow Brazilian making progress down the left.
The striker - on loan from Real Madrid - carried the ball on towards the edge of the area, where he simply barged past Royals skipper Graeme Murty and blasted a low strike under Hahnemann from 10 yards.
Reading were in danger of being torn apart on the counter-attack, but could have pulled a goal back when Sidwell powered his header over from a corner.
Arsenal then failed to deal with a ball into the six-yard box - only for Sidwell to drag his shot across goal and wide of the far post.
Baptista almost added a third, while substitute Jeremie Aliadiere saw his effort correctly ruled out for offside before Reading pulled one back with three minutes to go.
A corner from the left was flicked on at the near post - and Fabregas stuck out a boot to divert the ball past Jens Lehmann.
It needed a fine save at his near post from the German to keep out Sidwell's fierce drive, before Arsenal safely saw out four minutes of added time
